Updated Reliablecomics.com

I made a lot of changes to Reliable Comics to make it more of a blog/e-comics deal. For the next month or so there'll be daily postings of all the past Danny Dutch comic strips (I renamed the strip to Reliable Comics' Laugh Menu because there's a dude on flickr named Danny Dutch now and his updates are screwing with my Google Alerts, and the strip's more of an ensemble thing anyhow *making a smug Hollywood face*) and I'm going to put as much of my other comics and drawing junk on there as I can get around to. So check it out and post some comments and subscribe to the RSS feed and buy comics from Sparkplug. From now on I'll only use this site to share Hulu clips and lettering samples.

This image sums it all up:

Gluyas Williams Stuff

There's been a little bit of activity regarding Gluyas Williams lately on the internet: First, a batch of dailies on Ger Apeldoorn's The Fabuleous Fifties blog; Second, on Allan Holtz's Strippers Guide, a 1949 Editor & Publisher write-up about cartoonist Francis Dahl with a quote from Gluyas Williams.

There's unfortunately not been any new activity on gluyaswilliams.com, but maybe I'll do some scanning when I'm too lazy to draw.

Also a H/T to Mike Lynch who beat me to the punch on these same links the other day.

The two drawings here are illustrations from the 1932 book Cut Off My Head by Jasper Whiting.

Danny Dutch Weekly Strip #36

I didn't do anything for a month! Anyhow, I'm a step away from just killing this blog since I never post much of anything anymore...You should bookmark the Danny Dutch Strip RSS Feed or my Flickr photostream since that seems to be where all the big action is. Also keep an eye on reliablecomics.com since I just renewed the domain for another year. And don't forget to buy Danny Dutch's Illiterate Yellow Funny Book from my inestimable pooblisher Sparkplug Comic Books and Stories. That's it, I guess.

Danny Dutch Weekly Strip #27

Strip #27. i'm really making some headway lately! I just have one more strip to do to complete enough for my upcoming comic book. I drew the cover over the weekend. I think it'll look pretty good, I guess.

Weekly Strip #25

This is the first panel to strip #25

Comics Reporter Tom Spurgeon linked to the strip today which was pretty neighborly of him. If you came from there thanks for the interest. I've only posted the first panel of the last few strips as a tease for the eventual mini-comic version that I'm planning for APE in November.

You may also want to look at the Flickr set of the strips for an easier reading experience ( I think so, anyway). I tend to get stuff posted there before I put it here--gotta get my money's worth!

Danny Dutch Weekly Strip #23

Just to tease anyone who's reading these, for the next few I'm just going to post the first panel and then force you to buy the printed version if you want to read the whole thing. Coming in November '08.

It might also save me some time which I can devote to drawing more comics, or drawing the same amount of comics, but faster. Or better. Or merely maintaining the same lax schedule as always...the sky's the limit!

Gluyaswilliams.com Update

Tonight I added fifteen daily strips from 1929 to gluyaswilliams.com. How did you spend your Friday night??

This batch of scans was kind of a slapdash affair, as I was just plowing through my huge backlog of unscanned strips. While I uploaded fifteen strips tonight, I still have around 50 more from 1929, and a big stack I just bought from '45/'46, and still more from '24, '31, '27 and who knows what else.

Now and then I'll get a nice email from somebody who just discovered the site.

Gluyaswilliams.com Update

I added a batch of ten gags/illustrations done for Rand McNally to gluyaswilliams.com. These were made from scans I found on an ebay auction ages ago, I did my best to fix them up. The one I've posted here was too far gone, so I didn't post it to gw.com, but nothing is too shitty looking to put on a blog.

Gluyaswilliams.com Update

I added three daily strips from 1924 to gluyaswilliams.com. In an effort to get more strips up faster, I didn't go to any trouble cleaning these up, or making black-line versions. They look good either way. With luck there'll be more to come!

For more info on Gluyas Williams don't hesitate to checkout the latest issue of Comic Art Magazine, which includes a nice article by Jeet Heer and published by the estimable Buenaventura Press. This issue also features a cover by pal Tim Hensley and a additional book by other pal Ivan Brunetti. It's been on the stands for over a year, so you've probably bought one already.

Reasons

Well, not much is happening for me lately--just moved into a new apartment, but I don't have enough of my stuff transported to get any comics or scanning or much of anything at all done. However, I mean to have Weekly Strip #11 for next Wednesday, March 12, and a post or two with scans of Chinese comics I brought back from my trip there in 2004; I have some neat stuff that I rediscovered during my packing. I may also get some stuff together to add to gluyaswilliams.com, but that's within the next few months, not particularly anytime soon.

Please keep reading!

Links to Me

I've gotten a little bit of new traffic in the last few days from Tom Spurgeon and Newsarama's blog--I hope you guys like what I've got here. Unfortunately I don't have anything very new up and I took this week off from my comic strip because I moved. SO check out the old strips here or at my Flickr page, and bookmark, because something new will show up eventually...

More Reasons

AT&T has let my DSL service get interrupted, so my week vacation from weekly comics may go into two weeks...

Reasons!

You may have noticed that this site hasn't been here for a few days--i'm using a free webhost (Doteasy, which has always been really nice, service-wise; use me as your referrer!) and I exceeded my monthly traffic quota of 1gb. I chalked this up to lots of hits from Google Image Search, where somebody will download my whole site to see one thumbnail of boobies. So I uploaded a robots.txt file to try and stave off hits from there; if I did it right, soon none of the images from this site will show up in the image search. Bad or good, I don't know, we'll see.

NO COMIC STRIP THIS WEEK: I also took a vacation from my weekly strip with the site outage as my excuse. Back next Wednesday, Feb 6, for sure! I've been getting a pretty good response to them...if only they could earn me some money! Speaking of which:

I've been trying to FIND A JOB this week, so far not a lot of luck. I must be looking too far up on the foodchain or something. Ironically, a job involving 'food' and 'chain' may be in my immediate future. If you'd like to help, it would be appreciated, please get in touch! (gosh, that reads like I'm asking for donations or something--not at all...leads, leads!)

Thanks for reading. I think I'll do one more dry, texty post after this, and then get back to not posting anything. Alienated yet??

Banners

I made these banners to put on my MySpace profile, and on this page. On the bottom one I tried to create a universal blog icon but unfortunately it doesn't read if you reduce it to 14 pixels high, so I'll keep working on it. (y'know, like the RSS icon: )

NEWS

Sorry for the lack of new posts lately. I just started a new job, and haven't had much time. But I got a copy of the most recent issue of Make: to read on the bus, and it's kind of fun.

Nutty Blogger Stuff

I just today discovered that there were a few comments that didn't get posted because somehow I switched my settings with blogger so I had to moderate or approve the comments. Well, it's all fixed now, the comments show up, and thanks for looking, everybody.

Gluyaswilliams.com - New Stuff

I added ten illustrations from the poetry book Translations from the Chinese by Christopher Morley. They're all done with graywashes, which I haven't seen a lot of from Gluyas Williams. CHECK THEM OUT! (in the "illustrations" section)

I also added three strips from 1929. On two of them I left the newsprint color instead of bleaching it out; I know some people like to see them that way.

WHAT

Sorry I haven't posted anything lately; my whole world is an upside-down wreck! I'll get back on it soon, though.

In the meantime, you can buy my four new mini-comics (two of which got a pretty good response at SPX, the other two of which experienced merely so-so reception) on my recently dusted off web store. And also, in the even meaner time, enjoy this picture of me.

Web Site Updates

Today I added a new Life magazine strip to gluyaswilliams.com. I've got several more cartoons from Life, Collier's and the New Yorker in the pipeline, so you'll see those when I get a chance to scan everything.

I also set up the doodle gallery portion of my cartooning site, reliablecomics.com. It's not firing on all cylinders just yet (still gotta make a graphic or two, and find more drawings), but there's stuff to look at if you've got a minute and don't mind some dead links and red X's instead of pictures.
